Want to Jam but don't know how?

Here's some information to help you feel comfortable and prepared to participate!

  1. Support the jam! This is not a show and tell. Instead, it’s a chance for us to all collaborate and make some beautiful music! Songs will be picked from a songbook that we are making. You can find the PDF version of the book here (still working on it!) to practice along to.

  2. The person who is leading the song is in charge. They set the pace, choose who takes a break when, and can make whatever stylistic choices they want (ie how many tags they want at the end, whether to solo on the break or chorus, etc.). Listen to them for directions!

  3. Everyone in the jam circle will have a chance to lead a song and take a break (solo)! Don’t want to lead a song?? No problem. You can totally still participate in the jam and just pass when it’s your turn. Don’t want to take a break?? Also no problem, just make sure you are communicating that with the leader of the song by shaking your head no when it’s your turn to break, or just telling them outright that you don’t want to take breaks.

  4. This jam will be centered around bluegrass, folk, and Americana music. When choosing a song, think about how easy it will be for people to follow along with. Songs with a bridge or complicated chord structures, while totally awesome, can end up being jam busters /:

  5. Acoustic instruments only. As cool as electric guitar is, it will drown out the rest of the instruments and won’t support the jam as a whole.
